College After 50- My First Semester Completed
Well I did it! I finished my first semester of college with a 3.3 GPA! It’s not perfect, but I’m still proud of myself! I have, however made a change in my course of study. I started out as a “Business Administration with Emphasis on Accounting” major, but it didn’t take me long to realize that I DO NOT want to do accounting for the rest of my life. Strangely enough, I did get an “A” in the class but still….. So I’ve changed my major to “Medical Office Administration.” This was my first choice to begin with, but my adviser was pushing me towards the Bus. Admin/Accounting because of my strong background as an Admin Assistant. I don’t regret starting out as I did because, you never know, right? I really like business, and will probably take another class in it as I have 2 more elective classes I can take. Since I go to a private college (Heald), my choices are limited, but I love the school and wouldn’t change it even if I could!
So there you have it, my progress so far. At the age of 51, I was nervous going back to school, but now, I would encourage anyone who is considering it, no matter what your age, Go for it! I have found that after 2 attempts, the private university is a bit more suited for an older student, but it is a personal choice. I would say that at least 30% of the students there are over 40 so that makes me feel more comfortable than the community colleges did. I just didn’t feel that I fit in there, but now, well, let me just say, it is a very positive experience! The people there, from the tutors in the LRC all the way up to the president of the university are very helpful and so willing to help in any way! Student services is awesome in many ways, they even offer advice and resources if you are having financial problems. So as I said before, don’t let anything hold you back! Financial aid is available to anyone who qualifies, and it costs nothing to check into it!

Julehya: Thank you for the beautiful comment and for stopping by.
Knowing what you want to make your life of and then going for it no matter the price is the only way to make our life matter.
Congratulations!
Denford: Not a problem, I have been so busy with the new college semester starting up, I haven’t been doing my drops as often as I should. Thanks so much for letting me know you stopped by!
Thank you woman!

I just wanted you to know that I dropped in on you from Entrecard today. Unfortunately, I have exhausted my 300 drops for the day so I could not return the drop…..but I did visit!

I was so happy to read your blog. I is very encouraging to me. I am 52 and will be attending college in the fall. My major will be Office Administration. I have not been back to school since I graduated in 1977.I am determined to do my best. Congrats on the 3.3
Mike: Thanks for the kudos!
I’m still proud of my 3.3, but I am going to work hard to get it up a little higher next time. I figure this was my “maiden voyage” so to speak. Thanks for stopping by, hope to see you again soon!
Nessa: Thanks so much for your comment and for the kudos! I felt the same way as you about going back to school. I thought I wouldn’t have the energy, but it has done alot for my self esteem and I actually look forward to most days at school! Never say never!
Congratulations!!….A 3.3 GPA is awesome!!….Good for you, keep up the good work
Well done! Congratulations
I couldn’t wait to finish school cos I wanted to work and earn money, my very own money. It has been too long, I doubt I have the energy and drive to go back to school again. And for that, I salute you!
Brenda: Wow! Sounds like you had a terrible time in school, i know I did! I can understand your trepidation, but believe me, it is sooo different in college, and at my age, it’s really great because I don’t have the peer pressure, the sexual tension (raging hormones!) nor do I feel like I am vying for the attention of the teachers. Just tell yourself that you are worthy and you are intelligent (which I can tell you are by your blog!), and perhaps your nightmares about school will go away.
Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment!
Congratulations! I’m your age and cannot even begin to imagine going back to college at my age. I still have nightmares that I’m in school but haven’t attended in awhile because of work, home life, family, etc. and when I DO go back I cannot remember my locker number, nor the locker combination, nor my schedule and when I finally DO remember a class, I cannot remember which room it is in, etc. I’m not certain what my phobia is about school but apparently I have one! Best of luck to you in getting your degree! And kudos to you for having the gumption to go for it!
