  • Thank you Chuck At k8ch for the description and history on this anxiety producing walkway. I suppose I should have done some research when I posted it, but hindsight. It has a very interesting history, but you would never find me on that cliff side. How exciting for the adventurers who have so much more courage than I do, though! :)

  • The young German chap who filmed this is an amazing fellow. I love Spain! I’ve never seen this part. I had to know more so I looked on Wikipeia. Here’s what I found:

El Caminito del Rey (English: The King’s little pathway) is a walkway or via ferrata, now fallen into disrepair, pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro, near Álora in Málaga, Spain. The name is often shortened to Camino del Rey.

In 1901 it became obvious that workers at the hydroelectric power plants at Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls needed a walkway to cross between the falls, to provide for transport of materials, and for the inspection and maintenance of the channel. Construction of the walkway took four years and it was finished in 1905.

In 1921 King Alfonso XIII crossed the walkway for the inauguration of the dam Conde del Guadalhorce and it became known by its present name.

In some places the walkway has collapsed. The walkway has now gone many years without maintenance, and is in a highly deteriorated and dangerous state. It is one meter (3 feet and 3 inches) in width, and is over 300 meters (984 feet) above the river. Nearly all of the path has no handrail. Some parts of the concrete walkway have completely collapsed and all that is remaining is the steel beam originally in place to hold it up and the wire that follows most of the path. One can latch onto a safety-wire to keep from falling. Several people have lost their lives on the walkway in recent years; after four people died in two accidents in 1999 and 2000, the local government closed the entrances. However, many adventurous tourists still find their way onto the walkway to explore it.

The regional government of Andalusia budgeted in 2006 for a restoration plan[1] estimated at € 7 million.

  • It’s still scary though.. with or without cable.
I’m kinda adventurous in a way but I’m very afraid of heights.
I think now I’m better at it. I used to be scared of taking flights.
But look at me now! Hehe!

  • Cashmere, if you look closely, there is a cable attached to the rock on the left hand side, I’m thinking he was holding that when he walked on the ledge, and yes it would be a LOOONG drop down if that cable came loose. This is why I’m no adventurer! :)

  • Nice place… and scary too!
The path they were walking on looks like they can break apart and fall off anytime.
    And there was no safety!
And did they balanced themselves on that narrow ledge?
I can’t imagine if they lose their balance halfway.. =\

  • Roxie, Of course you can put it on your blog. :) I’m glad you liked it. I did too!

  • OMGosh! That’s amazing! It’s like a visualization of addiction. That’s just what it’s like. Incredible. Can I put this on my blog and write about it? (giving you the proper credit of course!) Please let me know.

  • holy guacamole! this might just be the most amazing youtube video i’ve ever seen! thanks for digging it up for us! now i have to go and read up on this place …

  • Oh I definitely agree Veronica, I wouldn’t be caught dead on that cliff! I did enjoy watching the video though, it reminded me of watching a horror film like Friday the 13th where you are waiting for the murderer to come out of the closet, LOTS of anxiety. :) Thanks for watching!

  • This video was too frightening, but I got to see an area that I for sure would never walk.

    Thanks
